How and When to Prune Roses for Maximum Blooms

How and when to prune roses might be one of our most asked questions! Don’t worry, pruning your roses is a simple process. One significant advantage of easy-care Easy Elegance® roses is they require very little pruning.

REQUIRED TOOLS

When pruning, we recommend protecting your hands with good gardening gloves meant for working with roses. Keep your hands safe from scratches! A good pruner is also an obvious necessity when taking care of pesky stems. If you don’t have one, head to your local garden center and ask for a recommendation.

WHEN SHOULD YOU PRUNE

If you prune your rose shrub, it should be done in the spring before the plants start to bloom.

The first year your rose is in the ground, little to no pruning is required. Dead or damaged wood and crossing or inward growing stems can be removed.

A crossing stem is one that is crossing over another or that is growing towards the middle of the plant instead of in the direction of the other stems (as seen in the photo above). This keeps the center of the plant open for good air circulation.

As your rose grows, if you are looking to shape your rose a bit more, you can cut the oldest stems back by 1/3 to encourage new growth and more blooms.

HOW TO DEADHEAD A ROSE BUSH

Since Easy Elegance® roses are repeat bloomers, deadheading, or removing the spent blooms, is a vital part of their care routine. Keep an eye on your rose during late summer for spent blooms.

Once a bloom is ready to be deadheaded, trim off the stem of the bloom you’re removing at a 45-degree angle. Check out our deadheading roses blog to learn more.

And that’s it! Pruning is not required but can help your rose stay healthy and bloom more throughout the season. For more care tips and pruning advice, head to our Rose Gardening Calendar.
