Tips for Beginners

Roses are beautiful and easy to have in your garden. But, if you’re new to gardening with roses and unsure where to start, we’ve got your back. Follow these tips to ensure your first year with Easy Elegance® Roses is a success!

Pick Your Roses

The first step is knowing your Hardiness Zone. The Zone you live in will determine what roses are suitable to grow in your area. Head to our Hardiness Zone map to match where you live with the correct Zone. Or, head to the USDA website and type in your ZIP code to find your Zone.

Once you know your Zone, it’s time to pick out your roses! If you don’t have a specific Easy Elegance® rose in mind, look through the roses in our collection for inspiration. Filter by height and color for your perfect match. Just make sure that what you choose is rated for your Zone. Once you’ve decided, see if the rose is available to purchase on our website. If not, head to the Find a Retailer tool to locate a garden center near you where you can find Easy Elegance® Roses.

Decide Where You’re Going to Plant

All Easy Elegance® Roses do best when planted in well-drained soil with at least five to six hours of sunlight each day. Especially in cooler climates (Zone 5 and under), roses need sunlight to develop their gorgeous blooms. So, take note of the area in your yard that receives the correct amount of sun. Generally, south-facing gardens receive the most sun during the day, but every landscape is different. Just make sure to choose the best area based on the specifics of your landscape.

Additionally, keep in mind how big the shrub will get when it reaches full maturity. The best practice is to pick a spot that’s slightly larger than the mature height and width of your specific plant. This will allow the shrub to grow without any interference.

Get to Know the Basics

Deciding where to plant is the first step, but knowing how to plant and care for the rose once it’s in the ground is the next. Read through our Planting & Care page for all the specifics on planting, fertilizing, watering, and pruning your new rose. And, make sure you bookmark our Inspiration & Resources page for future use when questions arise.

Remember the Change of Seasons

There are slightly different things to keep in mind with each season change. Our Gardening Calendar lays all of these out for you in one spot. Follow the tips outlined for each season to keep track of what needs to get done and when.
