Guide to White Roses: Meaning, Care Tips, and Landscape Inspiration

There’s nothing quite like a white rose in a landscape of green. The stark coloring stands out and can create quite the focal point in

any garden or act as a seamless addition to any space. There are two white rose varieties in the Easy Elegance® collection: Champagne Wishes and Oscar Peterson. Let’s go over the features and benefits of each, plus care tips and ways to utilize each rose in your space. But before we get into that, we’re going to explain the meaning of white roses.

The Meaning of White Roses

White roses are a special type of rose that carry a variety of different meanings. From being a popular choice for bridal bouquets and weddings to symbolizing new beginnings, these blooms also symbolize peace, joy, remembrance and love. There are many different ways to utilize the white roses in your space!

Champagne Wishes

This pure white rose has buds that start out a soft apricot and eventually bloom to a great antique white. The foliage is a medium green that pairs well with the bloom color and compliments other flowers beautifully in an arrangement. Champagne Wishes is a repeat-bloomer, own root shrub that is extremely easy to care for. It will bring a fresh and unique look to your garden throughout the seasons.

Care Tips for Champagne Wishes
  • Planting: Champagne Wishes thrives when planted in full sun, so check out our planting blog to make sure you are planting your rose correctly.
  • Watering: Champagne Wishes does best when the soil is kept evenly moist. Be sure to watch our video on watering for the best tips and tricks to keep it hydrated all season long.
  • Fertilizing: Champagne Wishes doesn’t require fertilizing, but it will benefit from it. If you want to apply, be sure to use a granular, well balanced, slow-release fertilizer. Apply once in spring when you see green leafy new growth and be sure to follow the directions on the package. To learn more, watch our video on how to fertilize in spring.
  • Pruning: Easy Elegance® roses require very little pruning to thrive. Once your Champagne Wishes rose is established, we recommend pruning in early spring to remove any dead, damaged, or crossing stems.

If you don’t deadhead the spent blooms in fall, Oscar Peterson will form bright orange rose hips that you can use for jams, jellies, and as seasonal interest in arrangements.

Border Plantings

The color and size of Champagne Wishes and Oscar Peterson make them both great choices for a border planting. Whether you’re mixing Champagne Wishes with other perennials to create a complimentary design or using Oscar Peterson by itself to plant a walkway border, you’re sure to make a stunning impact in your space.

At maturity, Champagne Wishes and Oscar Peterson are great size options for creating hedge plantings. They are both roses with upright habits, making it easy to create a hedge in your yard by planting them with enough space in between for the roses to reach their full size without any obstacles.
